No. 1 mistake people make during divorce

As a famous divorce lawyer, Laura Wasser has received her fair share of outlandish requests.

“A couple once had a parrot that they were fighting over,” says Wasser, who has represented Kim Kardashian, Britney Spears and Ariana Grande, and is the director of evolution at

When emotions run high, it is tempting to leave these disputes in the hands of your attorney. But he’ll save you a lot of money and time if he simply cuts out the middleman, says Wasser.

“The biggest mistake couples make is not recognizing what’s happening,” she says. “If you let the lawyers take control, remember, we lawyers make money from your conflict.”

‘Take back power’

Couples often turn to lawyers to discuss tedious requests, most of which do not require any legal experience. All those emails Wasser sends come at a cost.

The average price of an uncontested divorce is between $1,500 and $5,500, according to a CNBC report. A contested divorce costs between $40,000 and $140,000.

“I’m not saying divorce lawyers are bad people,” he says. “I’m just saying that it’s our job to discuss things for you. Some of us don’t realize that our biggest job or duty is to figure things out.”

You can avoid sky-high bills by communicating with your partner.

“Take back the power,” he says. “Write down how you feel. See if there’s anything that comes to mind. You can usually figure it out.”

Unfortunately, the most common reason people get divorced, Wasser says, is because they can’t communicate.

“Because communication tools are not developed when things are going well, when things are not going well you tend not to have the ability or the means to discuss them,” he says.

But, if you can find a way to convey what you feel and what is important to you, it will be much more cost-effective than hiring a lawyer to convey your message.
