India’s developer population booming, age of AI has begun: GitHub CEO | Tech News

Thomas Dohmke, CEO of GitHub

India’s burgeoning developer community, combined with the new possibilities of artificial intelligence, will not only accelerate digital transformation but drive immense human and economic progress for the country, said Thomas Dohmke, CEO of GitHub, the platform for leading developers in the world.

The platform revealed that there are over 15.4 million developers in India building on GitHub, with a year-on-year (YoY) growth of 33 percent. India will overtake the United States as the largest developer community on GitHub by 2027.

“Where the software developers are, economic growth continues. By 2027, India will surpass the United States as the largest software developer community on the planet. This alone indicates incredible prosperity to come, but there is more. At the same time as India’s developer population is booming, the age of AI has begun,” Dohmke said during his speech to tech leaders at GitHub Galaxy Bengaluru.

He said developers are already 55 percent faster when using the Copilot AI coding assistant, meaning the software economy, valued globally in the trillions, is moving quickly thanks to AI.

“India will not only be a global leader but also the world leader in the AI era. “Both children and adults will learn to code in their native language, leading to a long wave of developers,” Dohmke said. She said creativity in Indian open source will flourish, leading to a spring of innovations and AI startups. And Indian companies will gain a competitive advantage in the global market, as their developers create software with accelerated code speed.

GitHub was acquired in 2018 by Microsoft in an all-stock deal valued at $7.5 billion. More than 100 million people, including developers from more than 90 percent of Fortune 100 companies, use GitHub to build products and services together in 420 million repositories.

Companies adopting AI

Today, GitHub Copilot has 1.8 million paid subscribers and has been adopted by more than 50,000 organizations worldwide. In India, GitHub revealed that it continues to see adoption of its Copilot-powered platform by companies across industries, including Cognizant, MakeMyTrip and Paytm, increasing productivity and the pace of innovation for these companies.

Prasad Sankaran, executive vice president of software and platform engineering at technology company Cognizant, said that since adopting GitHub Copilot, the company has seen higher productivity and better software quality, and its developers are able to deliver cutting-edge software. So far, through Cognizant’s Synapse training program, 35,000 Cognizant developers have been trained on GitHub Copilot, with another 40,000 developers planned to be trained. “We’ve seen the impact AI can make and that’s why we’re committed to empowering our developers with GitHub Copilot at scale. “It is a proven tool that can generate immense productivity gains and unlock innovation in completely new ways,” said Sankaran.

Vijay Shekhar Sharma, founder and CEO of financial technology company Paytm, said security was of utmost importance for Paytm, given its range of financial services. To monitor its rapidly expanding public cloud infrastructure, Paytm used to rely on third-party tools. This would end up with delays in supply and affect overall productivity. “Using GitHub Copilot, Paytm launched ‘Code Armor’, a solution that revolutionizes the way we approach security and development,” Sharma said.

Sanjay Mohan, group chief technology officer at travel platform MakeMyTrip, said the integration of GitHub Copilot into MakeMyTrip has resulted in substantial productivity gains on several fronts. “Coders are spared the boredom of coding mundane things, freeing up time for higher-order problem solving, which is critical to our travel business,” Mohan said.

Mohammed Rafee Tarafdar, chief technology officer at technology company Infosys, said GitHub Copilot is empowering its developers to be more productive and efficient, and allowing them to focus more on value-creating tasks. “Generative AI is transforming every aspect of the software development lifecycle and, using Infosys Topaz assets, we are accelerating the adoption of Gen AI for our customers,” Tarafdar said.

Open source innovations

GitHub also showcased how open source communities in India are leveraging GitHub Copilot to create digital solutions that help save lives. For example, Open Healthcare Network, a pioneering open source organization, is dedicated to improving the delivery and management of healthcare. Powered by a small team of dedicated developers, GitHub Copilot is accelerating the project’s growth as it addresses the needs of the country’s healthcare system. The project is now implemented in more than 200 hospitals.

“This powerful generative AI tool has dramatically increased our productivity in coding, documentation and testing,” said Srikanth Nadhamuni, Founder and CTO of Aadhaar and President of 10BedICU.
