Brighton are in talks with St Pauli for Fabian Hurzeler to take over as new head coach, with the club securing a work permit for the 31-year-old.

Hurzeler, who guided St Pauli to promotion to the Bundesliga after winning the Bundesliga 2 title last season, will replace the recently departed Roberto De Zerbi on the south coast this summer.

Brighton and St Pauli are in talks over compensation for Hurzeler, who the Premier League side identified following their data-driven analysis.

If Houston-born Hurzeler takes charge at the Amex, he will become the youngest manager in Premier League history.

Sky Sports News reported on Friday that former Brighton boss Graham Potter would not return for a second spell as head coach despite talks between him and the club.

‘One of the best German coaches’ | Hurzeler, a ‘brave solution’ for Brighton

Florian Plettenberg from Sky Germany:

“Hurzeler was a former professional footballer and started his coaching career only a few years ago. I would say he is one of the best coaches in German football. Many German clubs are also interested in him.

“On their way to promotion, St Pauli played sensational football. Hurzeler has a good character and a good guy. He is a bit like Julian Nagelsmann: they are both very modern, very confident, very brave. Hurzeler loves to attack, He wants to have the ball. He is not a defensive coach.

“I can understand why Brighton have been keeping an eye on Hurzeler and I think they have a good chance of signing him. Hurzeler is very ambitious and sure at 31 he is very young but he has nothing to lose.

“He has a great connection with the players, he is an outstanding figure despite his age and he was absolutely accepted at the club among the fans.

“For Hurzeler, he has to ask himself if it is the right move for him at the moment, but the way he runs the team and the way he wants to play football, it could be the perfect solution and a very brave solution for Brighton on this stage.”
