Erik ten Hag to stay as Manchester United manager and is in talks to extend contract | Football News

Erik ten Hag will continue as Manchester United manager.

United and Ten Hag are said to be aligned after the club’s end-of-season review, a process that lasted more than two weeks and saw other coaches canvassed for the job.

However, the conclusion of the review was that Ten Hag should remain in charge and negotiations have already begun to extend the Dutchman’s contract.

Ten Hag’s current contract ends at the end of next season and the club has the option to renew it for another 12 months.

United finished a disappointing eighth, their worst finish in the Premier League era, but beat rivals Manchester City to lift the FA Cup, Ten Hag’s second trophy in as many years.

What Ten Hag said about the future after the FA Cup final win…

In May, Ten Hag said:

“The team progresses and we win trophies. Two trophies in two years is not bad. Three finals are not bad, but we have to move forward. I am not satisfied.

“We have to do better and if they don’t want me anymore, I’ll go anywhere else to win trophies because that’s what I’ve done my whole career.”

Ten Hag had to deal with an injury-ravaged team all season but managed to salvage Europa League qualification with a win over City at Wembley.

The review concluded that Ten Hag deserves a chance to show what more he is capable of within the new sporting structure put in place after Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s INEOS took over football operations.

Mauricio Pochettino, Thomas Tuchel, Thomas Frank, Kieran McKenna and Gareth Southgate They were all linked with taking over at Old Trafford, but the club have now committed to Ten Hag.

Tuchel, Southgate and McKenna were sounded out during the review, which was said to have been more thorough than usual due to the new ownership structure. The process is expected to be similar in the future.

What happened with the managers sounded…

  • Southgate had no interest in engaging in any conversation other than about his job as England manager.
  • McKenna ended up signing a new contract with Ipswich
  • Tuchel’s team claim they want to take a break from football, while INEOS insist they decided not to hire the German

Ratcliffe’s INEOS has taken control of the club’s football operations since becoming a minority shareholder in February and has overseen major personnel changes.

Jason Wilcox has started work as technical director, while Omar Berrada will start as the new CEO this summer.

United’s review recognized the significant achievement of winning two trophies in two seasons, particularly the quality of the FA Cup victory against City.

United’s decision-makers are said to admire Ten Hag’s dedication, as well as the dignity and professionalism with which he has conducted himself.

The emergence of academy products Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo under Ten Hag and his work to develop them were among other factors considered by United.

The review also took into account mitigating factors, including injuries suffered by Ten Hag players and the number of problems concentrated in key positions.

United also believe that new signings, particularly Rasmus Hojlund and Andre Onana, need time to adapt, while Mason Mount spent most of last season sidelined through injury.

‘Man Utd spoke to other managers but Ten Hag could now get a new contract’

Sky Sports News reporter Dharmesh Sheth:

“Remember, he maintained during all his conversations with Sir Jim Ratcliffe who believed that he would be the man who would lead manchester united striker, who had a contract until at least next summer and who had no reason to believe that he was not going to be the coach.

“Manchester United have been carrying out their post-season review after that FA Cup final victory over Manchester City.

“After this review of last season and the functioning of the first team, the club and Erik ten Hag They had constructive discussions about what happened last season and what might happen in the future.

“Manchester United considered all eventualities. They spoke to other coaches and representatives of other coaches. Thomas Tuchel, Kieran McKenna and Mauricio Pochettino. But the conclusion after that review and all those conversations was that Ten Hag would continue as coach.

“The club and Ten Hag are believed to be aligned and have now entered into negotiations over a contract extension. This is really significant. He has one year left on his contract.”
