Country music star Toby Keith died Monday at the age of 62 after a long battle with stomach cancer. Now, former NFL quarterback Brett Favre is speaking out to reveal new details about Keith’s final days.
Favre talks about Keith’s final days
Favre, 54, told TMZ Sports that he was close friends with Keith and that he last spoke to him a few days before his death.
“I think at the end I was just tired,” Favre said. “He told me that when we had our conversation, he said, ‘Brett…whatever happens, I’m on board.'”
Favre went on to say that he hoped Keith had “turned a corner” in his health despite his sickly appearance at his December shows in Las Vegas, Nevada. However, during their final conversation, it became clear that Keith was not doing well.
“He said, ‘I stopped chemo and it probably hurt me more than the cancer,’” Favre continued. “And he said, ‘I just hope I didn’t leave it too late, but… I’m grateful to have had the opportunity to play some shows.’ I finished them.’”

Favre praises Keith
Favre also praised Keith for the way he handled his battle with stomach cancer.
“(Keith) handled it with grace, faith and family and resisted cancer as best he could,” he said, adding that he and the country singer bonded over golf. Although Favre couldn’t “remember a good or bad shot that he made,” he did remember his positive attitude.
“I can remember him smiling, and everyone shouting and having a lot of fun,” she said before describing Keith as someone who was “very funny” and “an entertainer” until the end.
“He was the best,” Favre concluded.

Tributes arrive for Keith
The world was devastated when Keith’s family announced his death earlier this week.
“Toby Keith passed away peacefully last night on February 5th surrounded by his family,” they said in a statement, according to People magazine. “He fought his fight with grace and courage. Please respect the privacy of his family at this time.”
In the days since his death, numerous tributes have poured in for Keith.
“Toby Keith was a patriot, you know, and he didn’t care who had a problem,” country music star John Rich told Fox News.

Reba McEntire also paid tribute to Keith, saying, “He will be greatly missed, not only as a friend but as a fellow performer and person in the music business and from Oklahoma.”
“But he doesn’t have to fight anymore and he doesn’t have to suffer anymore,” he added of Keith. “I hope one day to see him in heaven. Thank God we have his wonderful music to keep us company, even though he is not here on earth with us.”
