Barcelona director Deco approves European giants’ manager as Xavi’s replacement: Reports

Catalunya Radio (via Gestión Barça) reports that the Barça manager has approved his compatriot as Xavi’s successor. The latter has announced that he is leaving the Catalan giants at the end of the sea

Conceicao’s shares have grown at Porto, where he has won three Primeira Liga titles and three Portuguese Cups. He has overseen 259 wins in 357 matches in charge at the Estadio do Dragao. His team is currently third in the Portuguese League and is also in the round of 16 of the UEFA Champions League, facing Arsenal.

The contract of the Portuguese strategist with dragons Expires at the end of the season. This gives Barcelona the perfect opportunity to launch a move for him.

Xavi announced his departure from the Catalan club at the end of the season following a 5-3 loss to Villarreal. His team has struggled to replicate the 2022-23 campaign in which it won the La Liga title, sitting in third place, 10 points behind current leader Real Madrid.

The Blaugrana have been linked with several European coaches as a possible replacement for Xavi. These include Arsenal’s Mikel Arteta, Real Sociedad’s Imanol Alguacil and Michel Sánchez (Girona), according to FC Barcelona News.

However, Conceicao appears to be Barça’s main candidate to succeed Xavi. Deco is apparently an admirer of the Portuguese coach who has led Porto since 2017.

Barcelona put aside uncertainty over the club’s managerial position beyond this season on Saturday (February 3). The Catalans beat Alavés 3-1 thanks to goals from Robert Lewandowski, Ilkay Gundogan and Vitor Roque.

However, Xavi’s men were forced to spend the last 20 minutes of the game with 10 men. Roque received a red card for two bookable offences, but one of them was extremely controversial.

The young Brazilian tried to snatch the ball from Alavés defender Rafa Marín. It seemed that the Spanish center back was more to blame as both fell to the ground after the collision.

However, referee Martínez Munuera showed Roque a second yellow card and subsequently gave him the order to leave. It was a decision that infuriated Barcelona.

Deco has confirmed that the club will appeal the decision (via Barça Times):

“We will try to appeal the decision on Vítor Roque and hopefully the second yellow card will be erased.”

Barça’s victory was vital, as it allowed them to continue fighting to successfully defend their La Liga crown. Their next match will be on Sunday (February 11) when they face Granada.
