A Villa 1 – 3 Chelsea

Mauricio Pochettino says Chelsea are no longer the same team as they were 20 years ago and people must “move on” after he praised “one of the best” performances of their season.

The Blues won 3-1 against Aston Villa in the FA Cup fourth round replay match at Villa Park, setting up a home time against Leeds in the fifth round on the week starting February 26 .

After scoring a stunning free kick, Enzo Fernández took off his match jersey and showed his name and number to the crowd. The reasoning is unclear, but the game overall marked a clear improvement from Chelsea.

And in his post-match press conference, Pochettino launched a fierce defense of his players after being questioned about celebrating Fernández’s goal.

He said: “We have to stop being the Chelsea of 20 years ago. We are no longer this type of Chelsea. Now we have to move on and create this project.”

“We have to move forward, I don’t care if people are happy or not with my speech. I worry about the club, I worry about my players, I want to help the players.

“We are going to fight, I don’t care what people say. Today I am no longer sad or happy after a victory because we have experience, these types of projects need time and trust.

“We cannot form a team to challenge because too many things have to be fixed, we have to observe, analyze and compete.

“We are building a project that could last one year, two years, three years. Today it is seen that we were ready to fight. We fought for the fans, the shield, the coaching staff. Now the challenge is to be consistent.”

Pochettino: one of our best performances of the season

Chelsea’s Conor Gallagher scores his own goal at Villa Park

Replay was a game that changed performance and form. Aston Villa had thrashed Sheffield United at the weekend, while Chelsea had conceded four goals in each of their last two games.

But the Blues dominated the first half against a lackluster Villa side, with Conor Gallagher (11) – scoring his first goal of the season – and Nicolas Jackson (21) giving them a 2-0 lead.

However, Fernández’s stunning free kick in the 54th minute was the decisive goal. Moussa Diaby’s added-time consolation frayed the visitors’ nerves but Aston Villa were unable to complete an improbable comeback.

When asked about ITV Sport If it was one of Chelsea’s best performances of the season, Pochettino responded: “I think so… it’s one of the best or maybe the best of the season.

“It’s a very good moment for us and I’m very happy with the performance. The players were enjoying their football and that’s what made me most happy.”

How Chelsea found their form

Despite a positive opening from Aston Villa, it was Chelsea who dominated the match and took the lead in 11 minutes.

Jackson found the impressive Noni Madueke in the middle with her cross from the left, and the latter fed it back to Gallagher. Then it was a lovely curling shot from the midfielder towards the top left corner.

Chelsea soon took a 2-0 lead. Malo Gusto sent in a superb delivery for the waiting Jackson, who was unmarked as he nodded to Emi Martinez.

team news

  • Aston Villa made one change from their win against Sheffield United. Matty Cash replaced the injured Ezri Konsa.
  • Chelsea made three changes from their loss to Wolves. Nicolas Jackson, Noni Madueke and Benoit Badiashile replaced Raheem Sterling, Christopher Nkunku and Thiago Silva.

Aston Villa’s best opportunity came on the stroke of half-time. Ben Chilwell’s free-kick gave the hosts theirs, which they quickly took advantage of. However, the opening came to nothing when John McGinn fired a shot into the stands.

Ten minutes into the second half, Fernandez added Chelsea’s third with a stunning free kick. He won it after being fouled by Youri Tielemans just outside the box and produced a world-class effort through Martinez’s outstretched hands.

Aston Villa’s performance improved thereafter, although it was too little, too late. McGinn had a few chances, while Alex Moreno nodded wide, but they got a late consolation through Diaby.

His shot across the box went between the legs before hitting the net off the post. But despite the nervy finish, it wasn’t enough to force extra time and Aston Villa were knocked out of the FA Cup.

Chilwell: We needed that reaction

Chelsea defender Ben Chilwell to ITV Sport:

“It was exactly the reaction we wanted and needed. It wasn’t about wanting a reaction. We needed it. Fair play to all the guys.

“We wanted that pressure. We took advantage of it. The trust before the game in the locker room was the best I have seen: the unity. Today we delivered on the field.

“As a club, the players, the manager, the staff, the fans, everyone involved in the club. It wasn’t just the manager. Everyone associated with the club needed that today.”

Emery: Chelsea were more clinical

Aston Villa coach Unai Emery:

“We were excited and motivated and we started well, we didn’t score but we felt good.

“When they were entering our area, we were not being strong and they were affecting us. They entered our area with some centers and they were clinical. I more or less felt that the difference was the clinical form for them.

“We scored a little late and we didn’t have time to score the second goal. We have to accept and analyze the game. Winning them is not easy if you are not being clinical.”
